Anxiety sometimes strikes us as a doomsday feeling, as if there is something coming that we need to be prepared for. But what is it?

Sometimes we know the answer…but quite often we don’t.

We just have this weird feeling that something is wrong and we have to fix it, or the very least, have an action plan.

I often refer to anxiety as the “What if’s”. What if I don’t get this promotion at work? What if I do? What if I get cancer? What if my husband dies? What if I make chicken tonight? What if my husband would prefer beef? What if, what if, What if…

ANTS, or Automatic Negative Thoughts, run wild in our minds when we are not grounded and centred in our own energy. Our own negative thoughts can paralyse us with fear and insecurity. We often destroy our own confidence and self esteem, even without consciously doing so, because the thoughts are automatic, negative and frequent.

What if’s” are ANTS.

If left unchecked, the “What if” thoughts start to multiply and infest our minds – Just like an ant attack. A few scouts go out to check if there is something to feed on then the next thing you know, your whole head is swarming with the little buggers!

Looking back to the 2000 Millennium Bug drama, the fear and worry that was broadcast across the globe was astounding. It was anxiety at it’s best (or worst!) The ANTS were out of control! There was at least a two year build up of what might happen… What if all the computers stop working? What if planes fall out of the sky? What if there is an apocalypse? What if there is no food or water?

The list goes on.

People were hoarding food and survival kits. They were bunkering down. Everyone was thinking, “What if this was the end of the world and I haven’t done…”

But it passed. The world kept turning.

This is pertinent to remember when you are experiencing anxiety. It too will pass. The thoughts and things you are worried about today will probably be different next week.

Even when anxiety is severe and causing serious physical symptoms  (racing heart, dry mouth, shaking, sweating or gasping for breath) it is vital we find a way to distract our thoughts.

When we change our focus from the “What if’s” to something as simple as what is in front of us right now, we stop the ANT infestation in its tracks!
